I get little comfort from the observation that our governments have done the ‘right thing for the wrong reasons’. For example that the US may have been motivated by venal commercial and military power mongering aims but did a good thing in invading Iraq by overthrowing a vicious dictator.
Anyone who does the ‘right thing for the wrong reasons’, will usually be doing the ‘wrong thing for the wrong reasons’.
